Pwn’ing the 99 percent

Quick summary: 99% of those 99 percent appear to be… just a tiny little bit… retarded.

Last week, Reason.tv followed investment guru, radio show host, and unflappable defender of capitalism Peter Schiff as he spent three hours among the Occupy Wall Street protesters in Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park.

An unapologetic member of “the 1 Percent,” Schiff argued with all comers for the better part of an afternoon.

Schiff is no ordinary observer. As the prinicipal of the financial firm Euro Pacific Capital, he’s a full-fledged and unapologetic member of “the 1 Percent.” As an outspoken radio show host and commentator, he not only predicted the housing crash and financial crisis, he railed bank and auto-sector bailouts as they were happening. Schiff believes that capitalism offers is the only hope for young, frustrated people to have a vibrant and prosperous future. So he went to Occupy Wall Street to engage and debate the protesters.

Touring the Occupy Wall Street scene in New York with a sign that read “I Am the 1%, Let’s Talk,” Schiff spent more than three hours on the scene, explaining the difference between cronyism and capitalism, bailouts and balance sheets, and more.

“The regulation we want is the market,” said Schiff. “That’s what works.”

Schiff describes himself as “sympathetic” to the plight of the OWS protesters, but thinks their anger is misdirected at legitimate business interests and should be better at the White House, Congress, the Federal Reserve, and the crony capitalists they’ve bailed out.

Slavery in Pakistan

Thousands of women are imprisoned for adultery and even locked up for having been raped.
In a bare prison cell a veiled teenage girl huddles against the wall. Ruqaiya Khan is in prison because she wants independence from her family and in Pakistan Islamic law says that a woman’s Place is in the home. Stark faces peer from behind the bars of a Karachi insane asylum, housing 1200 women. Abuse and over-work cause women to die on average younger than men. We speak to lawyers who fight the cases of women trapped by Pakistan’s harsh Islamic laws. On any day up to 3,000 slave girls are for sale on Karachi’s streets. We speak to a 14 year old who was sold. A community leader says that even the government is involved in a protected and flourishing slave trade. Pakistani prostitutes dance for our camera. The brothels are legal. In Pakistan men have made a society designed only for their comfort.

Respect and Obey Authority

As if there weren’t yet enough reasons why religion is bad, here’s another one:

This is West Coast Believers Kid’s band called X-TReMe PoWeR. It was our second song and we made up the lyrics and put it all together through garage band. It’s all about respecting and obeying your teachers, your parents, and Jesus! Hope you like this one too!

Respecting your teachers and parents, doesn’t sound too bad – but other than that, it’s hard to find anything that isn’t wrong with this song:

Authorities are here to help you. Do what they say and everything will be okay.
[…]
If you listen and obey, success  is yours today.
[…]
First of all, pray for all, who are in authority.
So that we, can live, in peace and happiness.

Yeah, right. I’m sure Hitler and Goebbels would’ve been proud of them. Just don’t question anything and do as you’re told – it always worked out just fine in the past. And not just for them, for everyone! Now those are just from within the last couple decades – don’t even get me started on the times preceding that…

No DSLRs in Kuwait

Thinking about visiting Kuwait? Better leave your camera at home then – apparently the government just banned DSLRs from being used in public, unless it’s for journalistic purposes. Compact cameras and cellphone with cameras built-in are still ok though.

Why? At least according the local newspaper, the country has so little exposure to art, people tend to get afraid when seeing “big black cameras”.

And there I was, thinking people getting scared of “big black guns” are stupid. :-/

TSA: Don’t mind the rifles, but beware of the mighty nailclipper

In another story of epic stupidity, TSA officials decide to strip returning US soldiers from their multi-tools and even nailclippers, while simultaneously letting them keep their carbines, pistols and machine guns.

Quoting from the whole story over at redstate.com:

So we’re in line, going through one at a time. One of our Soldiers had his Gerber multi-tool. TSA confiscated it. Kind of ridiculous, but it gets better. A few minutes later, a guy empties his pockets and has a pair of nail clippers. Nail clippers. TSA informs the Soldier that they’re going to confiscate his nail clippers. The conversation went something like this:

TSA Guy: You can’t take those on the plane.

Soldier: What? I’ve had them since we left country.

TSA Guy: You’re not suppose to have them.

Soldier: Why?

TSA Guy: They can be used as a weapon.

Soldier: [touches butt stock of the rifle] But this actually is a weapon. And I’m allowed to take it on.

TSA Guy: Yeah but you can’t use it to take over the plane. You don’t have bullets.

Soldier: And I can take over the plane with nail clippers?

TSA Guy: [awkward silence]

Me: Dude, just give him your damn nail clippers so we can get the f**k out of here. I’ll buy you a new set.

Soldier: [hands nail clippers to TSA guy, makes it through security]

This might be a good time to remind everyone that approximately 233 people re-boarded that plane with assault rifles, pistols, and machine guns–but nothing that could have been used as a weapon.

Words can’t even begin to describe how stupid this is…
